Are Airbags Coming to UTVs? Why Side-by-Side Safety Tech May Be the Next Big Debate

Side-by-sides have changed dramatically over the last decade. What started as simple utility machines and trail rigs has evolved into a market filled with high-horsepower sport UTVs, family haulers, enclosed-cab workhorses, advanced suspension systems, massive touchscreens, cameras, ride modes, and price tags that rival those of new vehicles.

Now, there may be another safety-tech question coming for the industry:

Could airbags eventually make their way into side-by-sides?

That does not mean airbags are guaranteed to show up in your next UTV. No major OEM has announced airbags as a production feature for a mainstream side-by-side. But recent coverage from UTV Driver has drawn new attention to the idea, citing patent activity by Autoliv, a major automotive safety supplier, involving airbag systems designed for utility terrain vehicles.

And whether riders love the idea or hate it, this is exactly the kind of topic that could become a major debate in the UTV world.

Why This Topic Is Getting Attention

Airbags are expected in cars. They have also made their way into motorcycles, most notably with Honda’s Gold Wing. Honda says it announced the world’s first airbag system for mass-produced motorcycles in 2005, with the system becoming available on the Gold Wing in the U.S. in 2006.

Autoliv has also been pushing motorcycle airbag development. The company announced in 2023 that its first motorcycle “bag-on-bike” airbag system was planned to enter production in 2025, aimed at reducing the risk of serious injury for powered two-wheeler riders in frontal crashes.

Now the side-by-side world is being pulled into the same conversation.

Patent information listed by Justia shows Autoliv was granted a patent titled “Curtain airbag assemblies for utility vehicles” on July 26, 2022. The patent abstract describes an inflatable airbag assembly for a utility terrain vehicle that could deploy during a collision event to help protect an occupant.

That is the important distinction: this is not a confirmed production announcement. It is evident that safety suppliers have been seriously considering how airbag technology could be applied to UTVs.

UTVs Are Not the Simple Machines They Used to Be

The timing of this conversation makes sense. Modern side-by-sides are faster, heavier, wider, more expensive, and more technology-packed than ever.

Polaris markets the 2026 RZR Pro R as its most powerful RZR, listing 225 horsepower, a 74-inch stance, and 29 inches of usable travel. The same model lineup also features modern tech such as a 10.4-inch touchscreen display powered by RIDE COMMAND, an integrated rear camera, selectable vehicle functions, and available semi-active suspension technology.

Can-Am’s 2026 Maverick R lineup pushes the same high-tech direction. The Maverick R MAX X RS starts at $47,499, comes with a 240-horsepower Rotax turbo engine, a 10.25-inch touchscreen display with front and rear cameras, full roof, premium half doors, skid protection, and available Smart-Shox technology.

In other words, the modern UTV is no longer just a basic off-road toy. Many machines now have car-like price tags and advanced electronic systems, yet are still used in mud, rocks, dunes, woods, farms, and high-speed desert terrain.

So the question becomes fair:

If side-by-sides are becoming more advanced everywhere else, will occupant protection eventually advance too?

The Safety Data Shows Why This Conversation Matters

The airbag discussion is not just about adding cool technology. It connects to a serious safety issue in the UTV and off-highway vehicle world: rollovers, ejections, and occupant protection.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s 2024 OHV annual report says CPSC staff were aware of 2,577 deaths associated with off-highway vehicles from 2019 through 2021. Of those, 651 were associated with recreational off-highway vehicles, commonly referred to as ROVs or side-by-sides. The report also notes that overturns and collisions were common fatality hazards, and that occupants were frequently ejected in these deadly incidents.

The same CPSC report also says that in a 2023 special study of OHV-related emergency department-treated injuries, the OHV overturned in 63% of injuries, and the victim was ejected in 78% of injuries.

That does not automatically mean airbags are the solution. In fact, the first line of defense is still the safety equipment riders already have.

ROHVA’s safety rules tell ROV drivers to always fasten their seat belt, wear a helmet and other protective gear, keep all parts of the body inside the vehicle, avoid paved surfaces, drive at a safe speed, and never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

CPSC’s earlier Federal Register discussion on ROV safety also highlighted the importance of seat belts. In reviewed ROV incidents, CPSC stated that of 194 fatally injured occupants who were partially or fully ejected, seat belt use was known for 155, and 141 of those 155 — or 91% — were not wearing a seat belt.

That is a major point for this debate:

Airbags would not replace seat belts, helmets, doors, nets, harnesses, safe speed, or good judgment.

If airbags ever come to UTVs, they would have to be viewed as a supplemental safety system — not a free pass to ignore the basics.

Why UTV Airbags Would Be Complicated

Putting airbags in a side-by-side is not as simple as copying what works in a car.

A passenger vehicle has a controlled cabin structure. It has doors, dashboards, pillars, roof rails, steering wheels, sensors, seat belt pretensioners, and crash zones designed around road impacts.

A side-by-side is a very different animal.

UTVs are open-air machines. They bounce over whoops, drop into holes, slap rocks, climb steep grades, slide sideways, tip on off-camber trails, and are heavily modified by owners. Cages, roofs, doors, harnesses, seats, stereos, mirrors, windshields, storage bags, fire extinguishers, and aftermarket accessories could all affect how an airbag system would deploy.

That creates several big challenges:

False deployment: A UTV airbag system would need to distinguish between normal off-road abuse and a real crash or rollover.

Open cabins: There are fewer fixed interior structures than in cars, making airbag placement much harder.

Rollover protection: Many UTV incidents involve rollovers and the risk of ejection, not just frontal impacts.

Aftermarket modifications: Custom cages, seats, harnesses, doors, and accessories could complicate deployment zones.

Cost and serviceability: Airbags would add sensors, wiring, modules, replacement parts, crash repairs, liability concerns, and possibly higher purchase prices.

This is where rider opinions will split quickly.

Some riders will say, “If it saves lives, bring it on.”

Others will say, “No thanks. I don’t want another expensive electronic system that could fail, falsely deploy, or make my UTV harder to modify.”

Both sides have a point.

What Could UTV Airbags Actually Look Like?

The most interesting part of the Autoliv patent is that it does not simply describe a steering-wheel airbag like a car’s. The patent abstract describes an airbag assembly for a UTV that includes a housing mounted to the vehicle structure, an inflator, and an airbag cushion that deploys to protect an occupant during a collision event.

That suggests the UTV airbag conversation could be more about occupant containment and keeping people inside the protective structure than just cushioning a straight-ahead impact.

That matters because side-by-side safety is different from car safety. In many UTV crashes, the danger is not only what the occupant hits inside the vehicle. It is also the risk of being partially or fully ejected, struck by the machine, or having arms and legs leave the cockpit during a rollover.

A future UTV airbag system could theoretically focus on protecting the occupant zone inside the cage, helping reduce movement toward the roof, sides, or exterior of the vehicle. But again, that is the concept-level conversation — not a production guarantee.

Would Riders Actually Want Airbags?

This is where the debate gets interesting.

The pro-airbag crowd will make a simple argument: side-by-sides are faster and more powerful than ever, and many families ride with passengers. If airbags could reduce serious injuries in certain crashes without interfering with normal off-road use, they are worth considering.

The anti-airbag crowd will have an equally strong argument: UTVs live in harsh environments. They get buried in mud, soaked in water, pounded through rocks, jumped, rolled, modified, and repaired in home garages. More sensors and safety modules could mean higher costs, greater complexity, and more dealer-dependent repairs.

There is also the price question. On a $45,000 to $50,000 sport UTV, buyers may be more willing to pay for advanced safety systems. On a budget trail machine or a utility rig, the extra cost could be much harder to justify.

That may be where the industry eventually lands: if airbags do come to side-by-sides, they may show up first on high-end sport models, premium family machines, or enclosed-cab vehicles where the added cost is easier to absorb.

Safety Tech Is Already Part of the UTV Future

Even without airbags, the UTV industry is already moving toward greater use of technology.

Today’s premium machines can include smart suspension, electronic power steering, selectable drive modes, large digital displays, GPS, cameras, connected vehicle data, electronically controlled differentials, and advanced lighting. Safety and control systems are becoming part of the selling point.

So while airbags may sound like a stretch today, the bigger trend is not hard to see.

Side-by-sides are becoming more powerful. They are carrying more passengers. They are being used for recreation, work, racing, hunting, overlanding, and family trail riding. As the machines evolve, the conversation around safety will evolve with them.

That does not mean every rider will want airbags. It does mean the topic is no longer as far-fetched as it once sounded.

The Bottom Line

Airbags are not guaranteed to be coming to your next side-by-side. But the idea is now serious enough to be part of the conversation.

Patent activity indicates that safety suppliers are exploring ways to adapt airbags for UTVs. Motorcycle airbags have already proven that the technology can move beyond traditional cars. At the same time, the safety data around rollovers, ejections, and occupant protection shows why UTV safety remains a major issue.

Still, airbags would not replace the basics.

Wear the seat belt. Wear the helmet. Keep your arms and legs inside the vehicle. Use the doors, nets, harnesses, and handholds. Drive within your limits. Do not ride impaired. Do not let passengers ride where they should not.

If airbags eventually come to UTVs, they should be viewed as one more layer of protection — not a replacement for responsibility.

The real question for the side-by-side community is not just whether airbags are possible.

The real question is:

Would UTV riders see airbags as smart safety technology — or as one more expensive system they never asked for?

That debate may be coming sooner than many people think.
