Wayne Matlock’s No. 1871 Polaris RZR Pro R Factory races through dust at the 2026 SCORE Baja 400.

Wayne Matlock Wins 2026 Baja 400 and Polaris’s $50,000 Challenge

How Penalties Turned the Baja 400 Into Wayne Matlock’s $50,000 Win

Wayne Matlock is officially the 2026 SCORE Baja 400 UTV Overall winner, but the final results tell a much more complicated story than an ordinary podium sweep.

Matlock finished the 423.42-mile race in his No. 1871 Polaris RZR Pro R Factory with a corrected time of 9 hours, 54 minutes, and 28 seconds. That put him 15 minutes ahead of RZR Factory Racing driver Ethan Groom and secured the $50,000 Polaris SCORE Challenge prize.

Yet Matlock did not record the quickest unadjusted time in Pro UTV Open. Factory drivers Brock Heger and Cayden MacCachren both finished with faster raw times before a four-hour penalty and a disqualification removed them from contention.

That distinction does not invalidate Matlock’s win. In Baja racing, staying on the legal course and following speed-zone rules are part of the competition. It does explain why this victory deserves more analysis than the standard “Polaris sweeps the podium” recap.

Matlock Wins on Corrected Time

SCORE’s official results list Matlock first among all UTVs and first in Pro UTV Open at 9:54:28.193.

Ethan Groom finished second in the No. 1874 RZR Pro R Factory at 10:09:40.028. Dallas Gonzalez completed the all-Polaris podium in the No. 1851 at 10:20:38.862.

Matlock also placed 16th in SCORE’s combined four-wheel standings, ahead of numerous Trophy Truck, Class 1 and Trophy Truck Spec finishers. SCORE calculated his average speed at 42.74 mph.

Those numbers are impressive on their own. They become more significant after considering that Matlock reported stopping near Ejido Uruapan to replace a broken axle before continuing toward Ensenada.

The mechanical issue prevents this from being described as a flawless durability run. It also demonstrates something that matters in desert racing: Matlock Racing carried the parts, tools, and experience needed to repair the car without falling out of contention.

Two Factory RZRs Were Faster Before Penalties

The raw timing initially showed a different order.

Heger completed the race in 9:30:30.050, nearly 23 minutes quicker than Matlock’s unadjusted time. MacCachren recorded 9:39:38.173, roughly 14 minutes quicker than Matlock.

Neither result survived post-race review.

An updated penalty record lists a four-hour sanction against Heger for using a forbidden line. His corrected time became 13:30:30.050, dropping him to eighth in the Pro UTV Open.

SCORE disqualified MacCachren for passing within the final 100 feet of a speed zone. Matlock received his own 1-minute, 12-second speeding penalty, but it was not large enough to cost him the win.

The official result is therefore clear: Matlock won because he combined competitive speed with fewer costly rule violations. Heger may have been the fastest UTV across the course, but a legal route is not optional. MacCachren’s speed-zone infraction carried an even harsher consequence.

One reporting question remains. SCORE’s first publicly available penalty sheet included MacCachren’s disqualification and the time added to Matlock, Groom and Gonzalez, but did not list Heger. A later version added Heger’s four-hour forbidden-line penalty, and the final results reflect it.

That does not prove the sanction was questionable. It does give SCORE a reason to explain when officials identified the violation, what GPS evidence supported it, and whether the team appealed.

Why a Polaris Racer Could Win a Challenge Against Polaris

Polaris announced the SCORE Challenge in July with a simple public premise: any eligible UTV racer who defeated the company’s four official RZR Factory Racing entries and won UTV Overall at the Baja 400 would earn $50,000.

The original Challenge announcement did not exclude racers based on vehicle brand. That opened the door for Matlock, an independent racer outside the official four-car team, to win the manufacturer’s money while driving a Polaris.

It is an unusual outcome, but an effective one for Polaris. The factory team lost the Challenge, yet a customer RZR Pro R Factory won the race. Groom and Gonzalez then completed an all-RZR Pro R Factory podium.

Polaris also says five RZR Pro R Factory machines finished among the first 10 UTVs. SCORE’s timing records confirm six Polaris vehicles in the UTV top 10, although the official sheet identifies brands rather than the exact model of every entry. The five-car model claim therefore relies on Polaris’s team and customer records.

This Was Not a Stock RZR Comparison

The result supports the RZR Pro R Factory as a serious desert-racing platform. It should not be used as proof that an ordinary showroom RZR will deliver the same performance or durability.

The RZR Pro R Factory is a competition-only vehicle starting at $139,999 for the 225-horsepower configuration. Polaris lists a 255-horsepower version at $149,999. Both prices exclude destination and setup.

The purpose-built car uses a race chassis, a 130-liter fuel cell, MoTeC electronics, Alcon brakes, FOX 3.0 internal-bypass shocks, 35-inch BFGoodrich tires, and integrated competition safety equipment. Its estimated dry weight is 2,510 pounds.

That equipment makes the Factory car more comparable to a turnkey race program than a trail machine with bolt-on accessories. The price also represents only the starting point. Spares, entry fees, chase support, communications, fuel, transportation, crew, and race preparation can add substantially to the cost of competing.

For recreational owners, the relevant takeaway is not that a $40,000-class consumer RZR is identical to Matlock’s car. It is that Polaris has developed a customer racing platform capable of running with its own works team—and has built the parts and technical-support structure necessary to put several private entries near the front.

Can-Am Still Had a Result Worth Watching

Polaris owned the overall podium, but Can-Am racer Kaden Wells provided an important counterpoint. Wells won Pro UTV Forced Induction in his No. 2935 Can-Am and finished fourth among all UTVs at 10:29:46.564.

The result extended Wells’s class-winning streak through the first three rounds of the 2026 SCORE season. Pro UTV Open and Pro UTV Forced Induction operate under different technical rules, so the overall times are not a clean vehicle comparison. Still, Wells led the non-Polaris UTVs and kept Can-Am in the wider competitive picture.

Matlock Earned the Win—But the Penalties Are the Story

Matlock is not an unknown racer who stumbled into a factory upset. He is a former SCORE overall and UTV champion with years of Baja experience. At the Baja 400, that experience helped his team survive an axle failure, limit its penalty exposure, and remain close enough to capitalize when two faster factory entries lost their results.

Polaris officially awarded Matlock the $50,000 Challenge and, in the process, gained an all-RZR podium. Matlock earned the trophy. Polaris earned the marketing victory.

The unanswered question is whether SCORE will provide a fuller account of the violations that changed the order. Until then, the official result stands, but the difference between raw speed and a complete, rule-compliant Baja race remains the story’s most important part.

The RZR Factory Racing team returns for the SCORE Baja 1000, scheduled for November 9–15. That race will show whether the works team can answer Matlock on the course—and avoid the penalties that decided the Baja 400.
