Can CFMOTO’s New Z10 Survive the Pro SXS Test?

CFMOTO’s ZFORCE Z10 Is Going Pro SXS Racing—Now It Has to Prove Itself

For riders considering a CFMOTO ZFORCE Z10, the biggest unanswered questions have never been about its touchscreen or advertised horsepower. They are about belt life, cooling, drivetrain strength, parts support, and whether the new platform can hold up when it is pushed hard.

CFMOTO is preparing to put some of those questions under a much brighter spotlight.

The company has partnered with VanEperen Racing to campaign the ZFORCE Z10 in the AMSOIL Championship Off-Road Pro SXS class. Reigning champion Owen VanEperen and his father, Rodney VanEperen, have been identified as the drivers behind the new effort.

The partnership gives CFMOTO an experienced development team and a legitimate performance platform. What it does not give the company, at least not yet, is the right to call the Z10 race-proven.

CFMOTO Chose One of the Strongest Teams Available

Owen VanEperen enters the CFMOTO program after winning both the Pro SXS and Pro Stock SXS championships in 2025.

Championship Off-Road’s official 2026 season preview says Owen recorded 10 victories and 14 podiums in Pro Stock during 2025, including a seven-race winning streak. He also secured the Pro SXS championship in a Yamaha YXZ1000R.

Rodney has spent years racing alongside his son and previously won the series’ 2021 Pro Turbo SXS championship. The father-and-son operation has developed Yamaha race machines across multiple professional SXS classes.

That experience matters because a new race platform rarely arrives with a perfect setup. The team must learn how the Z10 responds to different clutch calibrations, suspension settings, track conditions, tire combinations, and cooling demands.

According to 131 Off-Road, Owen ended his relationship with Yamaha in February 2026 and spent much of the summer helping prepare the CFMOTO program. The publication reported that CFMOTO unveiled the project on August 9 at its annual dealer meeting in Minneapolis.

Neither CFMOTO nor VanEperen Racing has released a complete technical description of the race vehicles.

This Is More Meaningful Than Race Sponsorship

CFMOTO was already increasing its Championship Off-Road presence before the VanEperen announcement.

On June 4, the racing organization named CFMOTO the title sponsor of the season-ending CFMOTO Off-Road National at Glen Helen Raceway. That agreement put the brand’s name on an important race weekend, but it did not demonstrate anything about the performance of a CFMOTO vehicle.

Entering the Z10 changes that.

A sponsorship produces signs, advertisements, and broadcast exposure. A race program places the company’s engineering, parts support, and performance reputation where problems are harder to hide.

That is particularly important for the Z10. CFMOTO introduced the production platform with a company-claimed 154 horsepower from its 998cc turbocharged three-cylinder engine. The machine also uses a CVT, electronically adjustable FOX suspension, and an extensively equipped cockpit.

Those specifications attracted attention. The remaining challenge is earning the confidence that established Polaris RZR and Can-Am Maverick platforms have built through years of competition, aftermarket development, and owner use.

Pro SXS Is Production-Based, but the Race Car Is Not Stock

The CFMOTO race vehicle should not be confused with the Z10 sitting on a dealership floor.

Championship Off-Road defines Pro SXS as a production-based class for 1,000cc forced-induction vehicles, along with the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter Polaris RZR Pro R. Eligible vehicles must be based on production machines available to the public. At the same time, new models are subject to series approval, inspection, track testing, and data collection.

Several important systems must remain consistent with the production vehicle. Current class rules require OEM electronic control units, wiring, and electronic controls. Internal engine modifications are restricted, while front and rear differentials must come from the model being raced and retain their original gear ratios.

The rules still allow teams to make substantial changes, including:

  • Aftermarket CVT clutches, weights, springs and helixes
  • Commercially available intercoolers
  • Aftermarket exhaust systems
  • Wastegate actuators
  • Commercially available long-travel suspension
  • Race-specific cages, bodywork and safety equipment

The result is a race-prepared vehicle with meaningful production roots, not a stock-machine comparison.

If the Z10 performs well, that would support the potential of the underlying engine, electronics, drivetrain and chassis. It would not prove that a showroom Z10 could withstand the same treatment without race preparation.

The same caution applies to failures. A broken aftermarket clutch, race suspension component, or part damaged in contact would not automatically demonstrate a problem with the production vehicle.

Short-Course Racing Should Find Problems Quickly

Short-course racing is a severe but specialized test.

A Pro SXS repeatedly accelerates out of corners, lands jumps, runs in heavy dust, and puts considerable heat into its engine, CVT, and intercooler. Contact and hard landings also load the suspension mounts, steering components, axles, and chassis.

For CFMOTO, the most useful early information may come from how the Z10 handles:

  • CVT heat and belt durability
  • Engine and intercooler temperatures
  • Axle and differential loads
  • Suspension mounting-point stress
  • Steering and upright durability
  • Electrical and sensor dependability
  • Repeated impacts and chassis fatigue
  • Repairs between practice, qualifying and racing

A fast qualifying lap would get attention. Consistent finishes would tell owners and engineers much more.

A new platform that regularly overheats, loses belts or requires major repairs between sessions will struggle to build confidence. A Z10 that stays competitive late in a race and improves from one event to the next would provide a more valuable result, even without an immediate victory.

Owen VanEperen Gives CFMOTO a Real Benchmark

CFMOTO’s driver selection removes one potential excuse from the evaluation.

If the company had entered with an inexperienced team, poor results could be blamed on vehicle preparation or unfamiliarity with professional short-course competition. The VanEperens know what a front-running SXS should feel like and how to develop one during a racing season.

Owen also comes from a very different platform.

The Yamaha YXZ1000R combined a high-revving engine with a transmission that provided a more direct mechanical connection than the Z10’s turbocharged CVT. Moving to the CFMOTO means adapting to different power delivery, clutch calibration, and heat-management demands.

The Z10 may offer stronger turbocharged torque, but the team must deliver that power consistently without creating excessive belt or cooling problems. Owen’s experience in a championship-winning Yamaha should give CFMOTO useful feedback about where the new platform is competitive and where it still needs work.

The First Race Has Not Been Confirmed

Three Championship Off-Road weekends remain on the 2026 schedule:

  • Bark River, Michigan: August 15–16
  • Crandon, Wisconsin: September 4–5
  • Glen Helen, California: October 2–3

As of August 12, the official series lineup pages still list the upcoming fields as “coming soon.” CFMOTO and VanEperen Racing have not publicly confirmed which event will serve as the Z10’s debut.

Bark River would provide an immediate test with elevation changes, long straights, and a fast natural-terrain course. Crandon would place the program on the sport’s biggest stage, while Glen Helen carries obvious promotional value because CFMOTO is the title sponsor.

Because Owen and Rodney missed the opening portion of the season, a conventional 2026 championship campaign is no longer realistic. The remaining races may be development appearances preparing the team for a greater 2027 effort.

CFMOTO has not confirmed a full-season 2027 program.

Racing Could Benefit Owners Without Producing an Immediate Win

Race teams find weaknesses under loads that are difficult to duplicate during an ordinary trail ride. They also discover which parts are hard to service, where temperatures build, and what needs additional strength.

A serious Z10 racing program could eventually help owners through:

  • Improved clutch calibration
  • Revised cooling strategies
  • Stronger replacement or accessory components
  • Better suspension setup information
  • Faster parts identification
  • More aftermarket development

None of those benefits have been promised. CFMOTO has not announced plans to transfer competition updates to customer machines.

Racing could nevertheless encourage suspension, clutching, skid-plate and driveline companies to invest in the Z10. That would help address one of the platform’s disadvantages against the massive RZR and Maverick aftermarket.

One Race Will Not Settle the Reliability Debate

A strong debut would show potential, not sustained dependability.

Race teams inspect and service their vehicles far more frequently than typical owners. They can replace parts between sessions and may use expensive components that are not included on a production machine.

One mechanical failure would require similar context. Riders would need to know what broke, whether the component was original, how the vehicle was being driven, and whether the problem resulted from contact, setup, or design.

The useful evidence will come from patterns:

  • Does the Z10 repeatedly finish?
  • Does it remain competitive late in races?
  • Are the same components failing?
  • Can the team improve between events?
  • Does CFMOTO explain technical setbacks?
  • Do racing developments reach ordinary owners?

Those answers will reveal more than one podium photo or broken belt shared across Facebook.

CFMOTO Still Needs to Explain the Program

The public reveal shows that CFMOTO and VanEperen Racing have built a Z10 Pro SXS effort. Several important details remain unanswered:

  • Will Owen and Rodney each race a separate Z10?
  • Is this a full factory team or a factory-supported private program?
  • Which event will mark the competition debut?
  • Will the team enter every remaining 2026 race?
  • Has the series completed technical approval and assigned Z10-specific requirements?
  • How much of the production engine, turbo, CVT, and suspension remains?
  • Is CFMOTO preparing for a complete 2027 campaign?

Until those details and actual race results are available, describing the Z10 as race-proven would be premature.

CFMOTO has chosen a credible way to begin proving it. Now the company must show that the program goes beyond an impressive reveal and produces useful results for the people considering the machine.
