Can-Am Factory Racer Kyle Chaney Makes History with Victory at 2025 King of the Hammers

The 2025 King of the Hammers in Johnson Valley, California, was a historic event for Can-Am, as Kyle Chaney became the first-ever driver to claim victory in the 4400 Unlimited class in a modified UTV. Chaney, alongside his co-driver Terry Madden, showcased precision driving and unwavering perseverance, securing the win in their Can-Am Maverick R by finishing over 30 minutes ahead of their closest competitor.

This victory marks a significant milestone in Can-Am’s racing history, as the 4400 Unlimited class has long been dominated by custom-built trucks and buggies with high-horsepower engines. Chaney’s triumph proved that the Maverick R platform could compete with some of the most challenging vehicles on the planet, even those from major automotive manufacturers.

“We are immensely proud of Kyle’s achievement and the effort our team put into this race,” said Jean-Francois Leclerc, BRP Race Manager. “King of the Hammers is unlike any other race with its combination of high-speed desert terrain and technical, rocky canyons. To see the Maverick R prevail against vehicles with three times the horsepower is extremely gratifying.”

The 4400 Unlimited class race is considered the crown jewel of King of the Hammers, consisting of three laps that test both the driver’s skills and the machine’s durability. Chaney qualified fourth, starting in the second row. He held steady in the top six through the first lap before taking the lead on lap two. The third lap, an actual test of navigation skills, presented a unique challenge—drivers had no prior knowledge of the course as it had only been revealed the day before the race. But with Madden’s expert navigation, Chaney and his team kept on track, ultimately finishing with a time of 7 hours, 53 minutes, and 45 seconds.

“We drove our best, and my crew put everything they had into this,” Chaney said. “I have to thank Can-Am and CT Race Worx for building this car for us to battle against all the top guys in the 4400 race. We picked some good lines and Terry was awesome with the navigation. The third lap was crazy—we had no idea where we were going. We just had to pick our lines as we went and stay close to the checkpoints. It’s a Can-Am, it never quits!”

While Chaney took the top spot, he was not alone in representing Can-Am. Cody Miller and Hunter Miller also showed great potential in the race. Cody had been running in second place for much of the race but had to retire due to technical issues. Despite their challenges, the Miller brothers and Chaney showcased the Maverick R’s performance capabilities and further solidified Can-Am’s presence in the 4400 Unlimited class.

In addition to the historic win in the 4400 Unlimited class, Can-Am drivers dominated the Pro Mod class in the UTV Hammers Championship race. Cody Miller took first place and second overall, Nathan Parker finished second in Pro Mod and third overall, and Paul Wolf completed the podium with a third-place finish in Pro Mod. All three racers demonstrated the Maverick R’s toughness, performance, and reliability under the extreme conditions of King of the Hammers.

As the 2025 season continues, Can-Am racers will next compete at the San Felipe 250 on April 5, 2025, where they’ll look to keep up the momentum from their historic win.
